Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
PNG avoids another lossy JPEG encoding step, but it cannot reconstruct missing detail. The PNG may be larger while looking the same.
Why this happens
PNG avoids another lossy JPEG encoding step, but it cannot reconstruct missing detail. The PNG may be larger while looking the same.
What to try first
Choose PNG for later editing or compatibility. Start from a higher-quality original if the actual goal is sharper content.
Try it on a fresh copy
- Choose your JPG or JPEG image.
- Convert it to PNG and save the new file.
- Check its size and appearance. The format change does not restore detail already lost through JPEG compression.
How to tell whether it worked
Check that the converted file opens correctly and that its size suits your next step.
