How to add a text or image watermark to PDF

A step-by-step guide to add a text or image watermark to PDF, with advice on the settings and checks that matter.

Before you start

Choose short watermark text or a clear image. Adjust placement and opacity so the document remains readable.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Open the PDF and enter a short label, such as Draft, or choose an image watermark.
  2. Adjust position and opacity in the preview. Keep the document readable beneath the mark.
  3. Save a copy and inspect pages with both light and dark backgrounds.

Check the saved file

Check both light and dark page areas; a watermark can disappear against one background or obscure another.

Watermarks are not secure PDF redaction

A watermark identifies or labels a document. It does not securely remove the content underneath it or prevent copying. Use watermarks for labels such as Draft or a logo. Do not use a watermark or a white overlay as a substitute for verified redaction of sensitive information.
