How to convert an iPhone HEIC photo to JPG
Turn an iPhone HEIC photo into JPG for an upload form. Check orientation and color, keep your original, and troubleshoot conversion failures.
Before you start
Keep the HEIC original and convert a copy when another app or website requires JPEG.
How to do it, step by step
- Choose the HEIC photo from your device and keep the original.
- Convert it to JPG and download the copy.
- Open the JPG to check orientation and colors, then upload that file to the app that rejected HEIC.
Check the saved file
Open the JPG and check its color, orientation and detail before deleting any source copy.
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
HEIC is common on Apple devices, but some websites and applications expect JPG. Conversion improves compatibility rather than adding image detail. Use JPG for a recipient who cannot open HEIC. Keep the original when you may need higher-quality editing later.
Convert a photo that an upload form will not accept
If a form accepts only JPG or PNG, make a JPEG copy of your HEIC photo rather than changing its filename. Keep the HEIC original for your photo library. After conversion, open the JPG and check rotation, colors and fine detail; a more compatible format is not necessarily a more faithful archival copy.
If the file cannot be decoded
HEIC files can differ depending on the device and capture mode. If browser conversion fails, try exporting a JPEG from your device’s photo application, then use that copy for the upload. A single JPG should not be assumed to preserve a Live Photo’s motion or every item in an image sequence.
