How to convert JPG to PNG

A step-by-step guide to convert JPG to PNG, with advice on the settings and checks that matter.

Before you start

Keep realistic expectations: changing a file format does not reverse JPEG compression already present in the source.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Choose your JPG or JPEG image.
  2. Convert it to PNG and save the new file.
  3. Check its size and appearance. The format change does not restore detail already lost through JPEG compression.

Check the saved file

Check that the converted file opens correctly and that its size suits your next step.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

PNG avoids another lossy JPEG encoding step, but it cannot reconstruct missing detail. The PNG may be larger while looking the same. Choose PNG for later editing or compatibility. Start from a higher-quality original if the actual goal is sharper content.
