How to convert PDF to Word
Learn how to convert PDF to Word (DOCX), check whether your PDF is scanned, and fix broken paragraphs or tables after conversion.
Before you start
Check that you can select text in the PDF. FileHero creates DOCX from extractable text; complex layouts may need cleanup.
How to do it, step by step
- Open a PDF with selectable text in PDF to Word. A scanned page needs text recognition before a text-based conversion can work.
- Convert the document and download the DOCX file.
- Open the DOCX in Word or a compatible editor. Compare it with the PDF, then fix paragraph breaks, headings and tables before continuing your edits.
Check the saved file
Open the DOCX in Word and check headings, paragraphs, dates and page breaks against the PDF.
Why PDF to Word changes the layout
PDFs store text at page coordinates, while Word lays it out in paragraphs. Columns, unusual fonts and scanned pages do not translate cleanly. Use the original PDF as a reference while rebuilding formatting in Word. If you only need a small correction, editing the PDF directly may be quicker.
Will this PDF convert into editable Word text?
Try selecting a sentence in your PDF viewer. If individual words are selectable, a text-based conversion is a reasonable starting point. If clicking only selects the whole page image, the document is probably scanned and needs OCR first. Some scans already have an OCR text layer; select and copy a short passage to check that it reads correctly. A password or copying restriction may also prevent extraction.
Choose conversion or direct editing
For a one-word correction in an otherwise finished document, editing the PDF directly can be less work than rebuilding it in Word. Convert to DOCX when you want to rewrite paragraphs, rearrange sections or reuse the text in a new document. FileHero extracts text into a Word document; it is not a promise to reproduce a brochure, invoice or multi-column page exactly.
Fix the common problems after conversion
- If a paragraph breaks after every line, join the lines in Word before applying paragraph spacing. Keep a copy of the PDF open beside it so you do not accidentally join separate sections.
- If a table has lost its columns, compare each row with the original. For data you need to calculate, try PDF to Excel instead, and still verify the cells.
- Check accented characters, bullets, page headers and footnotes. Saving the DOCX does not automatically prove that all of the source text was extracted.
