How to convert PNG to JPEG
Convert PNG to JPG (JPEG), understand what happens to transparency, and fix format, size or dimension problems on upload forms.
Before you start
Decide whether transparency matters. JPEG and JPG are the same format, and neither supports transparent pixels.
How to do it, step by step
- Choose the PNG you need in JPEG format. JPG and JPEG mean the same format.
- Convert and download the JPG. Transparent areas need an opaque background because JPEG cannot store transparency.
- Inspect logos, small text and the background. Keep the PNG if transparent edges are important.
Check the saved file
Check the background and fine edges in the downloaded JPG.
Why a PNG gets a white background as JPG
PNG can store transparency; JPEG cannot. Converting to JPG requires filling those transparent regions with an opaque color. Keep PNG when you need a transparent logo. Use JPG for photographs or destinations that require it, and review the flattened background before sharing.
Is JPG different from JPEG?
No. JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format; the shorter extension is simply common in filenames. Converting a PNG to JPEG changes the encoded image data. Renaming picture.png to picture.jpg does not perform a conversion and may leave the receiving website unable to read it.
What happens to a transparent background?
PNG can store transparent pixels; JPEG cannot. After conversion, those pixels need an opaque background, so a logo or cutout may look different. Keep the original PNG if you need to place the image over different backgrounds. JPEG is usually a better match for an ordinary photo than for a transparent logo or a screenshot full of small text.
When a website still rejects the converted image
Read the upload requirements separately: the site may specify JPEG, a maximum file size and exact pixel dimensions. Conversion changes the format, not necessarily all three requirements. If the JPG is too large, resize it to the required dimensions or try image compression. Reopen the saved file and check its properties before uploading it again.
