How to create a ZIP archive

A step-by-step guide to create a ZIP archive, with advice on the settings and checks that matter.

Before you start

Give the source files descriptive names before adding them. Add related documents together so recipients know what belongs in the bundle.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Add the files you want to send together. Give them recognizable names before making the archive.
  2. Create the ZIP and wait for the download to become available.
  3. Open the downloaded archive and check that every intended file is inside.

Check the saved file

Open the downloaded ZIP and verify its file list before sending it.

ZIP versus compression: which should you use?

ZIP is useful for packaging multiple files. Photos and videos are often already compressed, so packaging them may barely reduce their size. Use image or video compression first when size is the main problem. Then create a ZIP if you still need a single attachment.
