How to crop an image without stretching it
A step-by-step guide to crop an image without stretching it, with advice on the settings and checks that matter.
Before you start
Choose the subject that must remain visible. Pick square, 4:3 or 16:9 when the destination specifies an aspect ratio.
How to do it, step by step
- Open the photo and choose an aspect ratio if your destination requires one.
- Move and resize the crop area. Everything outside the selection will be removed.
- Save the crop and check the edges. Resize afterward if you also need specific pixel dimensions.
Check the saved file
Look at the edges for cut-off faces, text and logos before saving.
Why a cropped photo looks blurry
Cropping discards pixels; it does not create additional detail. Enlarging a small crop can make the remaining image look soft. Start with the highest-resolution original, crop less tightly, or use a smaller final display size. Resize only after the crop is settled.
