How to resize an image to exact dimensions
A step-by-step guide to resize an image to exact dimensions, with advice on the settings and checks that matter.
Before you start
Find the width and height required by the destination. Keep proportions enabled unless you deliberately want to stretch the picture.
How to do it, step by step
- Open the image and choose whether to resize by percentage or by exact pixel dimensions.
- Enter the new width or height. Keep proportions linked to avoid stretching faces, logos or lettering.
- Choose the output format, save a copy, and check its dimensions before uploading it elsewhere.
Check the saved file
Verify the saved image dimensions. A website that asks for 1200 pixels means pixel width, not the file size in kilobytes.
Resize or crop an image?
Resizing changes pixel dimensions across the whole picture. Cropping removes part of the frame, changing the composition or aspect ratio. Crop first to establish the final shape, then resize to the target dimensions. Avoid enlarging small originals when detail matters.
