Watermarks are not secure PDF redaction
A watermark identifies or labels a document. It does not securely remove the content underneath it or prevent copying.
Why this happens
A watermark identifies or labels a document. It does not securely remove the content underneath it or prevent copying.
What to try first
Use watermarks for labels such as Draft or a logo. Do not use a watermark or a white overlay as a substitute for verified redaction of sensitive information.
Try it on a fresh copy
- Open the PDF and enter a short label, such as Draft, or choose an image watermark.
- Adjust position and opacity in the preview. Keep the document readable beneath the mark.
- Save a copy and inspect pages with both light and dark backgrounds.
How to tell whether it worked
Check both light and dark page areas; a watermark can disappear against one background or obscure another.
