When to add page numbers to a document bundle

Numbering early can become misleading after pages are removed or files are merged. Existing printed numbers may describe a different sequence.

Why this happens

Numbering early can become misleading after pages are removed or files are merged. Existing printed numbers may describe a different sequence.

What to try first

Finalize the page order first and number the resulting copy. Use a clearly separate position if original page labels must remain visible.

Try it on a fresh copy

  1. Open the PDF after you have finished merging, deleting or rearranging pages.
  2. Choose a position with enough clear margin for the numbers.
  3. Export and check the first, last and busiest pages for overlap with existing footers.

How to tell whether it worked

Check pages that already have footers or printed numbers for overlap or duplicate labels.
