Why PDF to Word changes the layout
PDFs store text at page coordinates, while Word lays it out in paragraphs. Columns, unusual fonts and scanned pages do not translate cleanly.
Why this happens
PDFs store text at page coordinates, while Word lays it out in paragraphs. Columns, unusual fonts and scanned pages do not translate cleanly.
What to try first
Use the original PDF as a reference while rebuilding formatting in Word. If you only need a small correction, editing the PDF directly may be quicker.
Try it on a fresh copy
- Open a PDF with selectable text in PDF to Word. A scanned page needs text recognition before a text-based conversion can work.
- Convert the document and download the DOCX file.
- Open the DOCX in Word or a compatible editor. Compare it with the PDF, then fix paragraph breaks, headings and tables before continuing your edits.
How to tell whether it worked
Open the DOCX in Word and check headings, paragraphs, dates and page breaks against the PDF.
